Who are Cimar?
Cimar is a leading provider of Secure Medical Information Transmission services over the internet. Cimar’s service is in use at UK NHS Trusts/Hospitals, the private health sector, and internationally. We provide a secure, easy to use, low cost, low complexity solution for sharing radiology and clinical information, which dovetails into NHS protocols and other hospital systems without upheaval of current workflow.

Why is Cimar’s service preferable to other solutions?
Cimar is a truly borderless transmission service for radiology, and bolts on to any PACS or similar system as a sophisticated "companion" to extend its connected reach (see this link). In addition, Cimar is simple to use and significantly faster than other systems as it uses unique DICOM compression technology. Cimar runs as a “thin” web service, and only a web browser is required for a user to send highly compressed, lossless, and encrypted DICOM studies anywhere. No installed software is required on hard drives at each referring hospital, little or no IT cost is involved, and the service runs as a pay-as-you-go and very scalable facility. Documents and other data can be shared just as easily, as attachments to Patient studies, and studies can be “pushed” directly to favoured viewers or PACS if needed.

Can any hospital or imaging site send and receive DICOM?
Yes. Other systems restrict where images can be sent from or to either by their "club" approach, or their service specialty (such as inside N3 only). Either the sending or receiving site needs to be a contracted client of Cimar’s service. Many additional accounts can be setup under a single contract and shared for any other purposes. There is no cost for users or software. this is a true SaaS service.

Is the service safe and secure – how do I know?
It is imperative that any solution that permits the sharing of patient information is safe, secure, trusted and authenticated. Cimar’s service is all of these. The service has been rigorously tested and vetted by leading NHS departments, Primary Care Trusts, and Hospitals/Trusts who have independently verified that the service is what it claims to be in every sense. specifically that patient data, (indeed any data) is encrypted and cannot be intercepted, and that Cimar meets the highest standards required under the Data Protection Act (UK), e-GIF and FIPS and Department of Health regulations.
Cimar provides a “Trusted” and independently authenticated service. This is the purpose of our SSL digital certification. SSL also assures other (remote) Hospital IT managers that they are permitting their users to connect to a trusted and secure service.

How do I get permission to send radiology using Cimar?
Enquire if your hospital/site or the receiver you wish to send to, is running the Cimar service. If they are, ask for authorised access to the service, and that’s it. If you are in doubt, please contact Cimar on +44 (0)800 093 0913.

Can I transmit radiology from mobile scanning units?
Yes you can. Cimar’s compression technology reduces radiology losslessly to such a point that you can use any 3G or GPRS internet connection to send radiology from wherever you have a reasonable internet signal, without loss or degradation of the image set. Transmission is slower naturally, but perfectly tolerable.

What can Cimar’s service be used for?
There are many uses, but all converge around one requirement – to send radiology from where it is, to where it is next needed. This can be at several stages of the ‘patient pathway’ though clinical care, or not at all – such as academic use in virtual radiology training. Here are a few examples of how Cimar can be used now:
|
Solving the inherent problems surrounding the use of CD’s as a medium to despatch radiology to other users. |
|
Fast "On-call" access to radiology |
|
To enable fast critical advice prior to emergency patient transfer. |
|
For any patient referral need between disparate consultants, clinics, GPs and other Clinicians.. |
|
For any remote second opinion need. |
|
For sub-specialty MDT referral. |
|
For independent Radiology reporting services. |
|
For connecting mobile scanners with real-time diagnostics. |
|
To minimise security escorts for prisons, immigration and detention centres. |
|
For distributed drugs trials and diagnosis. (National and International) |
|
Building and accessing radiology training libraries for academic purposes. |
As a contracted client of the service you can set up an infinite number of dedicated worklists to manage specific interest groups.

Do I need to be trained in using Cimar?
Cimar’s service was designed with NHS involvement to ensure that anyone, at any time of the day, can easily send radiology in an emergency without training.
